PRESS RELEASE
Mine visit initiative at Phalanndwa Colliery
Canyon Coal’s Phalanndwa Colliery takes care of its surrounding communities by prioritizing education and female involvement in the mining industry.
Canyon Coal, which is a coal exploration and mining company with operations and projects in Mpumalanga and Gauteng provinces, collaborated with a community organisation called When We Women Rise (WWWR) to inspire and most importantly celebrate women’s month.
Canyon Coal’s Phalanndwa Colliery hosted the top ten performing female students from the Victor Khanye Local Municipality on the 15th of August 2018. The mine visit was arranged to inform and expose these students to the mining industry through physical interaction with the employees, machinery and the engineering processes involved. Canyon Coal hopes that the students acquire sufficient knowledge about the academic mining opportunities such as the bursaries, internships and learnerships offered to give them a platform for success.
Canyon Coal’s environmental and SLP officer Nthabiseng Ocia Mueti engaged with the students in an open discussion pertaining their career choices and her experience in the mining field. “Mining companies have the resources needed to influence and give students the opportunities for success by exposing them to the mining industries to make informed decisions and avail themselves to the opportunities offered” she said.
In addition to the mine visit, The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) team was invited to give a cancer awareness presentation to all the female miners at Phalanndwa Colliery. During the presentation female miners seem interested and eager to learn more about how they can take care of themselves and keep a healthy body and mind.
