With production at Gugulethu set to pick up pace, the mine’s plant manager, Penelope Mdluli, intends to hit the 400 ton per hour target. A chemical engineering graduate, Penelope joined the mine in early 2024, just as the development of the plant was about to be finalised. Her duties entail managing the plant and ensuring compliance and safety; while driving efficiency so the team meets its targets. “We must make sure that we produce according to the required specifications in terms of the quality because there is no use in producing coal that is not saleable,” says Penelope.

On the day the plant was commissioned, Penelope was in the control room, ensuring all the elements were running well like an orchestra conductor guiding the different instruments to create harmony. The plant was ready to run after being refurbished and upgraded with new components. “We were all anxious because we wanted everything to flow. We had some challenges, but I have to say, weexecuted well,” she recalls.

Penelope’s roots lie in Dundonald, a small town on the border between Mpumalanga and Eswatini. Her fascination with chemistry led her to metallurgy. “I was drawn to mineral processing, to the magic that unfolds at the plant, and the transformation into a finished product,” says Penelope. Her leadership style is marked by clear communication and team development. “For me, it’s about discipline and communication, ensuring that everyone under my supervision fulfills their responsibilities,” she concludes.
