Waste management & recycling company glides into mining

Lindokuhle Motha, co-founder of Expert Glide, a waste management and recycling company rendering its services to Gugulethu

Co-founded by Lindokuhle Motha and Jabulani Zwane, Expert Glide is a waste management and recycling company that has positively impacted the mining industry while addressing environmental concerns. “Starting the business, we had no capital. Despite these challenges, we had to be resourceful in raising the funds needed to launch the business,” says Lindokuhle. Once the business was up and running, their initial clients were local farmers.

Following the arrival of Canyon Coal’s Gugulethu Colliery, things began to improve. The mine advertised a tender for waste management services. Lindokuhle bid for the tender and awaited feedback. Expert Glide was shortlisted, and after completing the necessary procedures, they were awarded the contract. The company hired the services of Expert Glide in keeping with its commitment to ensure responsible waste disposal, comply with environmental regulations and promote sustainability.

“After Canyon Coal came on board, we began to gain more exposure and secured contracts with additional mines. This marked a significant period of growth for our business,” Lindokuhle says. Today, Expert Glide’s operations encompass waste collection, recycling of steel and HDPE pipes, and providing six bins to Gugulethu – three located around the site and three at the processing plant.

“We’ve had a very good relationship with the mine. They’ve treated us well and have guided us along the way,” Lindokuhle notes, emphasising the positive impact of the collaboration. He believes working with the mine has been a great learning experience which has helped them discover their company’s growth potential. “Additionally, we have gained valuable insights from some of the workshops hosted by the mine,” he says. The company’s team comprises one driver, two general workers and one manager. Lindokuhle is a hands-on manager who often helps his team during busy days. “On extremely busy days, I still put on my overalls and get my hands dirty to help,” he says.

Looking ahead, Expert Glide plans to expand its services to surrounding areas, targeting local companies and municipalities. “I strongly encourage individuals to enter the waste management field, as it can be quite profitable. However, they must realise that achieving success requires determination and hard work. If you are lazy, you won’t succeed,” he concludes.
