PRESS RELEASE

Certificates Handover Ceremony at ABET Facility at Hakhano Colliery

Trainees have received their certificates from the ABET Facility at Hakhano Colliery

Canyon Coal, which is a coal exploration and mining company with operations in Mpumalanga and Gauteng provinces in South Africa, opened a training facility for adult basic education on 31 May 2017. Following the first intake towards the end of May last year, the second group was identified and 90% of the group have successfully completed their basic education training at the ABET facility in Hakhano Colliery.

“We are grateful to Canyon Coal and the EEE (Educate, Enrich and Empower) team, if it wasn’t for you we wouldn’t have been standing here with these certificates in our hands. I never had mathematics in my grade 12 certificate and today I have achieved it. I’m proud of the work Canyon Coal and the EEE team has done,” says one of the trainees Mahlodi Maleka.

What raised the need for this programme is that most employers focus on internal development and what’s then left behind is the unemployed, uneducated individuals from the community. In this way Canyon Coal is able to help eradicate unemployment by developing skills. According to Anton Lessing, Group Human Resource Manager at Canyon Coal, the reason why these individuals are unemployable is because they didn’t have educational opportunities. This resonates with Canyon Coal, we try by all means to be hands on with developing our surrounding communities and prioritizes education through learnerships, internships, bursaries and now ABET is contributing to the growth of it.
