ADT operator training kickstarts Prudence’s mining career

Prudence Mashiane, ADT Operator at Khanye

Prudence Mashiane, a 24 year old ADT operator from Ekangala, never imagined she would find herself working in the mining industry. Prudence pursued a bachelor’s degree in education after she matriculated from Ekangala Comprehensive High School, but later realised it was not for her. Finding a job also proved to be a struggle, but Prudence remained hopeful until she was recruited for the training opportunity at Khanye.

After completing the training, Prudence received an unexpected call from a Khanye HR representative. “I got excited thinking it was for the certificate, but it was for an interview for a vacant ADT position,” she says. Not too long after the interview, she was offered the job.

Now, working in the pit, she faces different scenarios daily. “I am in the pit every day, and each day brings with it a different experience. Today, you are dealing with coal; the next day, it’s soil and other days, its rocks,” Prudence adds. Safety became a priority as she learned the importance of thorough inspections before operating the machine. Her long-term goal is to become a blaster, a passion sparked by seeing explosives at a career expo
