HR career shaped by mining
Walter Sedumedi has built a successful decade-long human resources career, working in South Africa’s minerals and construction sectors. He was recently appointed as Gugulethu Colliery’s HR SOR. Born and raised in Tshwane, Walter completed his labour relations qualification at the University of Pretoria, followed by a national diploma in human resources from a TVET. His career spans across the platinum, gold, chrome, and coal sectors. His initial plan was to become a lawyer, but he could not proceed due to financial difficulties, which led him to human resources. “From there, the rest is history because I started enjoying myself in HR,” he explains. “My career was built in the mining industry,” says Walter.
His responsibilities at Gugulethu include ensuring that employees comply with daily practices and improving human relations among other duties. During his tenure, he has successfully implemented several HR initiatives that have significantly improved employee satisfaction and productivity. “HR is evolving and comes with its own challenges because you must work with people, improve their motivation and productivity. I find fulfilment in enhancing employee collaboration” says Walter. His vision for the future is driven by a committed to improve, nurture, and develop employees.
