Khanye breaks new records

Dawid Venter, Khanye Mine Manager

Khanye Colliery had a productive year in 2024, marking significant achievements in both production and operational efficiency. “We are trending toward 2.4 million tonnes per annum in coal production. We also broke records for waste removal and cubic meters mined, surpassing our previous record of 723,123 cubic meters and reaching 802,211 cubic meters,” says Mine Manager Dawid Venter. Furthermore, the South Pit set a record in November with 296,932 total cubes mined.

To achieve a successful year, the team had to overcome several challenges, including heavy rains, service delivery protests and delays in the processing plant. “Early in the year, strikes and unrest in the nearby town of Bronkhorstspruit also disrupted operations, causing delays in production. However, we worked closely with local stakeholders to address the situation,” Dawid remarks.

Safety remains a top priority at Khanye, and the mine has achieved outstanding results. The mine maintained 2,564 Fatality-Free production days and 995 LTI-Free days by November 2024. New safety systems, including the MANGO safety management system and the Level 9 Collision Avoidance System, are being trialled for full implementation during the course of 2025.

Khanye is also committed to supporting its local community. The mine trained 32 community members on Articulated Dump Trucks, with five already hired, and made over R228 000 together with its contractors in donations to a local school for children with special needs. Dawid says the goal is to achieve reliable production and operational targets every month while continuing the mine’s commitment to sustainability and environmental management
