Koena embraces environmental stewardship
With a passion for environmental sciences, Koena Kgoshiadira embarked on his internship journey at Gugulethu in March, following a transfer from Ikoti Mine near Hendrina. “I studied environmental sciences and graduated from Tshwane University of Technology in Pretoria last year in May,” he says, his enthusiasm evident.
Since his arrival at the mine Koena has learned essential skills, such as doing inspections, compiling audits, handling community engagements, demonstrating his commitment to his role and the industry. “Mines need environmental officers to help them comply and protect the environment,” he says. Koena found mining attractive because it allows him to work outdoors which is something he enjoys. “I do inspections weekly. I think it is important since we have the Water Use License, which is a legal document that allows us to use a certain amount of water for our operations. “I’ve been exposed to monitoring of both ground and surface water as well as air, which is very important in the environmental field,” says Koena.
