Gugulethu first shipment marks voyage into the future

The successful dispatch of the first coal consignment from Gugulethu marks the beginning of a promising future for the mine’s production. The 4500- ton shipment made its way to the Rietkuil Siding for transportation to the Richards Bay Coal Terminal in KwaZulu Natal- with the involvement of 12 trucks owned by local contractors.

In the future, the focus will be ramping up production to the 2.4 million tons Run of Mine anticipated. We also expect the team to grow as operations expand,” says Gugulethu GM and Canyon Coal COO Jarmi Steyn. Jarmi further emphasises that the mine’s successful development, despite numerous challenges faced by the economy, is a testament to its resilience and potential for investment in new projects.

Critical to these developments was the successful commissioning of the 400-ton-per-hour coal processing plant during the first quarter of the year. This milestone not only ensured that the plant was ready to start producing high quality products but also demonstrated our operational readiness to meet customer needs.
