Mkhambi school project reaches triumphant conclusion

The Mkhambi Primary School  Project falls under Canyon  Coal’s SLP for Khanye

Thanks to a renovation project by Canyon Coal’s Khanye Colliery, learners at Mkhambi Primary School can now attend their morning assembly undeterred by rainy weather and scorching heat. Part of the project involved building shelters between the classroom blocks. The R1.31 million Mkhambi refurbishment initiative falls under the company’s Social and Labour Plan (SLP) for Khanye’s host communities. The school is located just over 20 minutes from Khanye. It has an enrollment of 790 learners from Sokhulumi township and surrounding farms.

Deputy Principal Isaac Mtshale says the upgrades have made the school’s environment more conducive, “It is a wonderful job that was done. The area looks very different, and it is neat, and we are happy,” says Mtshale. One of the new shelters now serves as a venue for assemblies, parents’ meetings, and school events, while the second structure, located near the kitchen area, provides a sheltered space where learners receive their daily breakfast and lunch meals.

The project started two years ago and was rolled out in multiple phases, including the construction of shelters, paving, upgrades to the school’s stormwater management system, installation of barge boards for kitchen and classroom shelters, and painting of facilities. Local community members benefited from temporary employment opportunities created through the initiative.

Canyon Coal Social Licensing Manager Xolile Mankayi remarked that any project that involves supporting education is a highlight for the company. “We are cognisant of the fact that over and above receiving stationery, books and other learning material, children have the right to a conducive environment. This project is important to us and the community of Sokhulumi,” Xolile says.
