The journey from intern to general engineering superintendent
For Siyasanda Ntshuntsha, the mining industry is more than just a job, it is a field full of growth and endless opportunities. Siyansanda, a General Engineering Superintendent at Gugulethu has built her career over the course of eight years. “I started as an engineering intern, then I worked as a supervisor, and at some point, I was promoted to foreman. It has been a rewarding experience,” she says. After matric, Siyasanda completed her diploma in mechanical engineering at the Walter Sisulu University. She then did her BTech degree with UNISA before landing an internship at an opencast mine where she gained hands-on experience working with machines.
As general engineering superintendent, Siyasanda’s role is as diverse as it is demanding. “My job involves ensuring compliance with the Mine Health & Safety Act and ensuring that our machines are running optimally,” she explains. A highlight of her position is leading a dynamic team of artisans, including diesel mechanics and auto-electricians. She finds fulfilment in mentoring younger colleagues, especially the interns on her team. “I enjoy guiding and mentoring them, it’s a responsibility I take seriously,” she adds.
Despite the strides made in transforming the industry and building women leaders like her, Siyasanda acknowledges that mining still has a long way to go when it comes to supporting women. Siyasanda says increasing female representation in leadership and outreach initiatives for young girls would make mining more accessible. “We should start talking to young girls about mining while they are still in school. They need to know the options available to them,” she says.
Balancing a demanding career with a personal life has also been a learning experience. “When I am at work, I ensure that I put my full attention to my duties so I can do my work to the best of my ability,” she says. Her advice to young people entering the field is to use every resource available to them like attending career exhibitions and connecting with people who work in the industry.
